College Spotlight

The deadline for students to apply for College of Education scholarships for 2010-2011 is February 15th, 2010. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, the College awards close to 150 scholarships to deserving students each year. The College welcomes four new faculty this year. Lisa Isbell is a Lecturer who will serve as Coordinator of the Multiple Subject Credential Program, Carlos Hipolito-Delgado is an assistant professor who joins the School Counseling faculty, Jonathan O'Brien is a Lecturer in the Student Development in Higher Education program, and Jim Scott joins us as the Distinguished Lecturer in Residence in Educational Administration/Educational Leadership.


Faculty in the Department of Teacher Education, Drs. Corinne Martinez and Trini Lewis, were recently awarded a $300,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Postsecondary Education. The grant focuses on developing secondary education teachers as instructional leaders in bilingual and English language learner settings. Dr. Martinez and Lewis will serve as co-principal investigators on this grant for Hispanic Serving Institutions that is supported by the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE).


Dr. Bita Ghafoori, Department of Advanced Studies in Education and Counseling, was one of 3 faculty in the University who were recently awarded a National Institute of Health (NIH) grant for building Research Infrastructure in Minority Institutions (RIMI). The faculty have received $4.7 million dollars for a 5 year period. Dr. Ghafoori will be a faculty fellow with the Research Faculty Development Core (RFDC) and her work will explore cultural conceptualizations of trauma exposure, mental health service utilization, and barriers to treatment.


The Ed. D. in Educational Leadership inaugural cohort began taking classes Summer 2007. The application deadline for Cohort 4 is January 15th with the program starting in Summer 2010. For more information visit the Ed. D. in Educational Leadership website.

Did you know that 80 educational employers attended the 2007 CSULB Education Job Fair, sponsored by Educational Career Services? Employers included school districts, charter schools, and learning centers and were recruiting for career and paraprofessional positions.

College of Education Adjustment to State Budget Crisis

Due to the state budget crisis, all CSULB faculty and staff are required to take unpaid furlough days during the year. All College of Education offices will be closed 17 days between August 13th and June 30th. In addition, each staff member must take 7 personal furlough days. Consequently, responses to various types of requests for services (walk-in, mail, email, telephone) from college offices may be delayed. We apologize for the inconvenience.


All College of Education offices will be closed on the following days: 8/13, 8/21, 9/8, 10/9, 11/2, 11/25, 12/31, 1/4, 1/5, 1/6, 1/7, 3/26, 3/29, 4/21, 5/6, 6/4, & 6/18. Please note that these are budget-related campus closure days. College offices will also be closed on the normal holidays identified on the campus calendar.
