2016-17 Dean’s Development Committee Members

California State University, Long Beach’s College of Education Dean’s Development Committee is a group of alumni, educators, and education supporters who lead by example and support the College of Education with an annual gift of $2,500 or more. They identify and introduce individuals who have a passionate interest in education and the potential to support the College, and arrange and host social activities which introduce community members to the needs of the College.  Most importantly, the committee serves as community ambassadors for the college as well as representing alumni & community interests in matters relating to the future of the college.

Dr. Jana Echevarria - Chair

Jana Echevarria is Professor Emerita at California State University, Long Beach where she was selected as Outstanding Professor. Her professional experience includes elementary and secondary teaching in general education, special education, English as a Second Language (ESL), and bilingual programs. Currently she serves as the ELL expert for the U.S. Department of Justice on the Lau v. SFUSD case.

Dr. Echevarria developed the SIOP model (Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol). It is a research-based and validated model of instruction for English learners that has been widely and successfully used across the country for over 15 years. It is taught in the teacher preparation programs here at CSULB. Dr. Echevarria has been on the College of Education Dean’s Development Committee since 2009 and served as the chair since 2016.

 

Dr. Ruben Ingram

Dr. Ruben Ingram

Dr. Ruben Ingram is the Executive Director of School Employers Association of California (SEAC). He is the former Executive Director of the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, and prior to that was District Superintendent for the Fountain Valley School District. He was a teacher and principal in the Long Beach Unified School District, has taught at California State University, Long Beach, the University of Southern California, and Chapman University.

In 1992, Dr. Ingram was recognized as the CSULB Distinguished Alumnus for the College of Education. Dr. Ingram has been on the College of Education Dean’s Development Committee since 2009 and served as the chair from 2011 to 2015.

 

 

John Battey

John Battey

John Battey earned his B.S. in Business Administration in 1970 and he received his Secondary Teaching Credential in 1971, both from CSULB. In 1985 he earned his M.A. in Education, and Administrative Credential from the University of San Francisco. He taught in the Torrance Unified School District from 1971-1972 and in the Newport-Mesa Unified School District from 1972-2008. He taught at TeWinkle Middle School for 12 years and taught at a Costa Mesa High School for 24 years. For the last 14 years he was the Director of Activities at Costa Mesa High School. John received the Golden Touch Award from the County of Orange Board of Supervisors in 1997, the California League of High Schools Region 9B Educator of the Year in 1998 and the American Red Cross Most Inspirational Advisor 2001-2002.

John is a current member of the CSULB Orange County Regional Council and is involved with the President's Scholars Program at CSULB. He is also devoted to mentoring and supporting first generation college students. John Battey has served on the College of Education Dean’s Development Committee since 2012.

 

Barbara Ellis

Barbara Ellis came to California in 1946. She earned her BA in Social Science/English in 1964 and her teaching credential in 1965. Barbara taught for 36 years in the Long Beach Unified School District; at Hughes Junior High School (22 years) and Lakewood High School (14 years). She was elected as the Lakewood High School Teacher of the Year by her peers and was awarded Outstanding High School Teacher of the Year by LBUSD.

When she retired, she took leadership roles in Alpha Delta Kappa, a women-in-education professional sorority that provides scholarships to CSULB students, and the Long Beach Chapter of the California Retired Teachers Association (LBCalRTA) where she has served as the scholarship selection committee chair since 2008. She has also been elected to the Board of Governors at Long Beach City College, beginning her three-year term on July 1, 2017. Barbara Ellis has served on the College of Education Dean’s Development Committee since 2017.

 

Dr. Mary Jo Lass

Dr. Mary Jo Lass

Dr. Mary Jo Lass earned her MA in Education from CSULB in 1954 and was hired as a full-time faculty member at CSULB in 1966. She joined the College of Education faculty in fall 1966.

Over her numerous years at Cal State Long Beach, Lass’ influence, innovation and honesty were shared with thousands of students who went on to become educators.

Today, she continues to support public higher education and change lives through various donations and gifts, including several endowed scholarships. Dr. Lass has served on the College of Education Dean’s Development Committee since 2009.

Dr. Kathryn Goddard

Dr. Kathryn Goddard is Emerita Dean of Student Affairs at CSULB where she developed and oversaw the School-based Student Development Program which placed an Associate Dean for Student Affairs in each college through the 1980s. She then developed the Student Development in Higher Education master’s degree program with Dr. Cynthia Johnson. This included The Protégé Program (forbearer of the Johnson Fellows) which placed SDHE master’s students in paid positions in the colleges, the Center for Collaboration in Education, and the Partners for Success Faculty Mentoring Students Program. After Kay came to CSULB in 1969-70 as Dean of Student Affairs, she earned her EdD in the History & Philosophy of Higher Education at USC. Kay has served on the College of Education Dean’s Development Committee since 2009.
