Adding Authorizations to a Multiple or Single Subject Teaching Credential

Holders of valid basic teaching credentials may obtain additional instructional authorizations.

  • Supplementary Authorizations and Subject Matter Authorizations are added to the original teaching credential.  They require a program of coursework specific to the authorization.
  • A Multiple Subject credential holder can obtain a Single Subject Credential by verifying subject matter competency (CSET examinations or an approved waiver program), completing EDSS 450 in the academic area, and completing an application for the credential.
  • A Single Subject credential holder can obtain a Multiple Subject Credential by verifying subject matter competency (CSET Multiple Subject Examination), completing a 3-semester-unit course in subject matter pedagogy directly related to teaching in a self-contained setting, and either completing a course in alternative methods of developing English language skills or passing the Reading Instruction Competency Assessment (RICA), and completing an application for the credential.

The Credential Center holds regular information workshops on Added Authorizations. See our main page for the next scheduled workshop and call 985-4109 to reserve a seat. You must bring a copy of your credential if you have one, and photocopies of all college transcripts.
