    U. S. Department of Education Grant Awarded to

    CSULB School Psychology Program

“Training School Psychologists as Instructional Consultants

in a Response to Intervention Model”

Drs. Kristi Hagans and Kristin Powers received a 4-year, $755,000 personnel preparation grant to recruit and train 44 school psychology graduate students in instructional assessment and intervention practices to promote the academic success of PreK-12 students.

The project is based on a scientist-practitioner training model where students engage in the research literature, and apply their knowledge to clinic cases in the Educational Psychology Clinic and field projects in local public schools. Ultimately, project graduates will be prepared to provide leadership to schools on (a) improving the identification of and assistance to struggling learners; (b) reducing disproportional representation of minority students in special education; (c) increasing PreK-12 student academic outcomes; and (d) increasing the instructional effectiveness of school personnel.

In addition to advanced training and experience in response-to-intervention methodologies under the direct supervision and mentoring of grant faculty, grant participants will have opportunities to engage in scholarship and research with faculty, as well as take a leadership role in assisting schools in the implementation of response-to-intervention. Finally, grant participants will receive $11,160.00 over 3 years. For more information regarding this grant project, please contact Dr. Kristi Hagans, School Psychology Program Coordinator, at khagansm@csulb.edu.
