School Psychology Overview

The school psychology credential program is a 60 unit course of study that prepares you to receive a California Pupil Personnel Services credential in school psychology. Classes are held in the late afternoon (4PM) and evenings to accommodate students who work during the day.

A master's degree in the behavioral sciences or education from an accredited University is required to complete the school psychology credential program. Students who do not have a master's degree when they begin the program must complete the joint educational psychology master's degree/school psychology program.

Relationship between School Psychology & Educational Psychology Programs

On average, students complete the credential program in 3 to 4 years.  This includes two to three years of full time (9-12 credits per semester) and one year of full-time internship or fieldwork. Students who are completing the Educational Psychology master’s program, or need to take prerequisite courses, may take more time to complete the credential program than students who have earned a masters degree in a related field from another university.

Bilingualism, biculturalism, and/or experience with public school students who are culturally and linguistically diverse are an asset to applicants as well as a strong academic record and good interpersonal skills.

E-mail questions to Dr. Kristi Hagans, coordinator of the school psychology program, at khagansm@csulb.edu or attend one of the monthly informational meetings. Prospective applicants are invited to attend one of the upcoming group informational meetings to speak with a faculty member about the program.  These meetings are held at Cha for Tea located at 5720 East 7th Street in Long Beach (a private business partner kind enough to let us use their space, so please order a beverage while you are there). The schedule for the 2007-2008 academic year is:9/14, 10/12, 11/9, 12/14, 1/25, 2/1, **5/16 from 4:00 to 5:00 Located at the Bellflower, 7th and Pacific Coast Highway merge. Phone 562-668-5100.

** Note the 2/8 session previously listed has been canceled due the National Association of School Psychologists annual convention in New Orleans.
