Social and Multicultural Foundations Prerequisites

The program requires three prerequisite courses, totaling nine (9) units. Prerequisites may be taken concurrently with program courses, but should be completed as early as possible in the student's course of study and must be completed prior to advancing to candidacy.

1. EDP 432 - Social and Cultural Diversity in Educational Settings (3 units)

Examination of personal attitudes toward distinct groups of people; study of historical and structural factors that either promote or diminish equal human worth and either empower or oppress people based on class, race/ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, ability, language, or religion.

2. EDP 485 - Theoretical Foundations of Language Minority Education (3 units)

Introduction to theoretical foundations of language minority instruction. Background on the historical and political context of the development of educational language policies. Same course as LING 485.

3. EDP 400 - Introduction to Educational Measurement and Statistics (3 units)

An introductory course in educational testing and measurement and statistical concepts that support these methods. Basic concepts of measurement including descriptive statistics, norms, reliability, and validity; correlation and simple regression; derived and transformed scores, issues related to the development of educational measures; interpretation of test scores. (Prerequisite for EDP 520.)

Note: Students may petition for course equivalencies for the prerequisite courses if they have taken an equivalent course at CSULB or another university. Prerequisite course equivalency forms are available from the Graduate Studies Office (ED 1-7) or from the SMF Program coordinator. Completed EDP course forms should be submitted to the Educational Psychology, Administration & Counseling department office (ED1-10).
