It is important to remain flexible and open to job opportunities. To increase your marketability, you must be flexible geographically and in the credential areas you are willing to teach. How can I get the most from the Education Job Fair?
The CSULB Education Job Fair is an event where educational employers and prospective educators meet one another. Employers can do initial screening of applicants and applicants can obtain applications from, and information about, school districts. On-site interviews may occur. How do I become a substitute teacher in California?
The minimum requirements to become a substitute teacher in California are possession of a bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited university; passage of the CBEST; and fingerprint clearance for school employment from the California Department of Justice (DOJ).
If you meet these requirements, you may seek substitute teaching employment at any school district. Each district has its own sub list and you will be required to submit an official application for employment and be processed for substitute employment by each individual school district.
To find positions, you can search Ed-Join (tip: use keywords substitute teacher), or check websites for individual districts in which you would like to work.
If you do not have a teaching credential, you will need an Emergency 30-day Substitute Permit, and the district that hires you will apply for this on your behalf. This substitute permit is valid in one year increments, renewable online each year, and will allow you to substitute teach on a day-to-day basis for no more than 30 days in the same classroom.
What types of questions should a teacher candidate ask in a job interview?
Candidates should always ask questions in a job interview. Ask questions that are important to you, but avoid questions about salary and benefits until a position is offered.
The following are good questions to ask an employer during an interview:
1. What opportunities are there for professional development?
2. What technology is available to teachers?
3. What extra-curricular activities are available for teachers?
4. What major issues will the district be addressing during the coming year?
What is a Placement File?
A placement file is a file that contains your student teacher evaluations and letters of recommendation. School district hiring officials usually require it as part of the application packet. Therefore, it is important to keep your self-managed placement file up-to-date, accurate and complete.
All CSULB candidates now manage their own placement files. Your self-managed placement file should include your student teacher evaluations, if applicable, and letters of recommendation from your master teacher(s) and university supervisor. You may also include letters of recommendation from supervisors of work or field work, previous employers, or college professors.
What should I include in my Self-Managed Placement File?
Your Self-managed Placement File should include your student teacher evaluations (if applicable) and letters of recommendation from your master teacher(s) and university supervisor. Prospective counselors, school psychologists, and other education professionals should include references from field work supervisors. You may also include letters of recommendation from work supervisors, previous employers, or college professors.
What should be included in a letter of recommendation?
Letters of recommendation should be written on the employer's official letterhead stationery, and should be dated and addressed "To Whom It May Concern."
When you request a letter of recommendation, you may wish to ask the writer to follow this format:
1. Inclusive dates you worked in the position
2. Capacity in which the writer supervised you
3. A brief description of your abilities, skills, and/or knowledge
4. A description of your job duties
5. A description of the grade level and/or population with whom
6. A recommendation for employment within the field of teaching,
counseling or administration, as the case may be.
What is an Interview portfolio?
An Interview Portfolio is a version of your Professional Portfolio that you will use during an employment interview. It is an exhibit of your credentials, accomplishments, and experiences that highlights your teaching abilities. It is typically kept in a three ring binder or some other portable holder. Use your interview portfolio to illustrate your discussion during an employment interview. You may wish to create a brief version of your portfolio that you could leave with an interviewer who requests more time to review it.
What should I include in my Interview Portfolio?
Include your resume, letters of recommendation, and student teacher evaluations. Also include your transcripts, teaching credential, sample lesson plans and other materials that reveal your strengths. You may also wish to include your philosophy of education and a discipline or class management plan, and photographs of yourself with your students engaged in learning activities.
