Student Teaching Options

Student Teaching Chart of Options (PDF)

FOR ALL STUDENT TEACHER APPLICANTS: All student teaching options include the support of a University Supervisor who observes and conferences with the student on a regular basis, and a weekly seminar held by the University Supervisor at a time and place to be determined (some interns meet with their University Supervisors on a bi-weekly basis).

Traditional Student Teaching (academic year) -- 5 full days per week for one semester in the classroom of a Master Teacher; two assignments, one lower and one upper elementary. At least one of the placements must be in a classroom in which the students are from a diverse cultural, linguistic, racial, ethnic, or socio-economic background, different from that of the Student Teacher.

Traditional Student Teaching (Summer Session) – 5 full days per week for the entire Summer Session in the classroom of a Master Teacher; two assignments, one lower and one upper elementary. One placement must be in a classroom in which the students are from a diverse cultural, linguistic, racial, ethnic, or socio-economic background, different from that of the Student Teacher.

Please Note:

  1. This may be completed over two consecutive summers or during one summer and part of one academic year semester.
  2. There are a limited number of placements each summer; most placements are for 8 units.

Track 4  ITEP-- 5 1/2 days and one full day per week for two semesters with a student teaching partner.  ITEP students begin and end their assignments in the same classroom to be a part of each phase of the school year.  During the two semester rotation at a school site, each student will have experiences at an alternate grade level and also have solo teaching time.   The length of these alternative experiences will vary and may be at another school site.

Internship – a paid teaching position in cooperating districts, (Anaheim, Bellflower, Long Beach, Norwalk-La Mirada, Little Lake or Westminster); internships are limited to outstanding MSCP candidates who:

  1. Have extensive field experience in an elementary school setting.
  2. Have received an employment offer from one of the participating districts.
  3. Have been admitted to the CSULB Internship Program.

Interns are in a separate category from students who are using their emergency permit teaching position as their student teaching experience (although the working conditions and Multiple Subject Program experiences are similar).  The intern credential and the emergency teaching permit are legally distinct teaching licenses.  As students in the Multiple Subject Program, who are ready for the supervised internship, interns must fulfill all program requirements, including outstanding course work.  Interns register for 8 units in two successive semesters.  They attend the student teaching seminar as scheduled by their program.  A University Supervisor will observe the intern periodically during the term, conference with the intern after site visits, and provide support as needed.  Interns will be evaluated each semester on program evaluation forms.
