Faculty Highlights

Department of Teacher Education - Drs. Corinne Martinez and Trini Lewis recently had their FIPSE proposal approved.  As ci-prinicipal investigators, they have received a grant from the U. S. Department of Education, Office of Post-secondary Education in the amount of $300,000.00.  The grant project focuses on developing secondary education teachers as instructional leaders  in bilingual and English language learner settings.  Teacher candidates will pursue simultaneously a single subject credential and a Master's degree with a hybrid focus in dual language development and a curriculum instruction.

The grant's innovative model includes five program goals and outcomes related to (1) increasing the access of Latino and other ethnic and linguistic minority teacher candidates to a CSU graduate program; (2) improving professional growth and increasing teacher candidates’ knowledge relevant to the education of EL students in secondary schools; (3) increasing teacher candidates’ awareness and respect for cultural and linguistic diversity in secondary school settings; (4) producing school improvement strategies through action research and other evidence-based approaches; and, (5) increasing student retention through engagement in professional service and collaboration. Other Innovative aspects include a teacher leader instructional specialist institute and a pilot study examining the model's effectiveness and EL student achievement.

Department of Advance Studies in Eduation & Counseling - Dr. Bita Ghafoori is involved in a recently funded National Institute of Health (NIH) grant, for $4.7 million dollars for a 5 year period. President King Alexander, (PI), Dr. Kevin Malotte, former Provost, Dr. Karen Gould, and a few other researchers from various colleges at CSULB, received a NIH grant for a Research Infrastructure in Minority Institutions (RIMI). The proposal included Bita's research study, which received excellent reviews by the NIH external reviewers. She will be a faculty fellow with the Research Faculty Development Core (RFDC). The RFDC will be the center of efforts to increase faculty capacity to conduct minority health and health disparities research and to increase faculty capacity to train and mentor students from health disparities populations to be the next generation of researchers in these areas. The specific focus of Bita's work includes the exploration of cultural conceptualizations of trauma exposure, mental health service utilization, and barriers to treatment.
