School Psychology Requirements

Students Entering Fall 2012 and After

  • Prerequisites need not be completed before applying to the program.
  • To view description of EDP courses click here.

  • Students entering the EdS program with a masters from an accredited university, transfer 9-units from their master's degree program for specialization.
  • All students, regardless of holding a master's degree upon entering the program, are required to complete a degree culminating activity (e.g., thesis or comprehensive exam).

Prerequisites

Prerequisite courses may be completed the summer prior to or during the first year in the program at the discretion of the advisor.  They do not need to be completed prior to applying to the program.

o   EDP 301 or 302  Child Development and Learning OR Early/Late Adolescent Development and Learning (3 units)

o   EDP 405                Positive Strategies for Classroom Management (3 units)

Degree and Credential Requirements

A minimum of 60 units is required.

(a)    Educational Psychology Emphasis

·         EDP 541                Seminar in Educational Measurement and Assessment

·         EDP 595                Qualitative Research Methods in Education

·         EDP 596                Program Evaluation in Education

·         EDP 604                Seminar in Human Development

·         EDP 605                Theories of Learning, Cognition, Motivation, and Social Development

(b)    Thesis Emphasis

·         EDP 698 (6 units taken over two semesters) and 3 units selected from:

  • EDP 519                Quantitative Educational Data Analysis I
  • EDP 595               Qualitative Research Methods in Education
  • Or 3 units of advisor approved 500/600 level elective from approved master’s degree

(c) Related field emphasis – 9 units from a master’s degree in a related field

 

Other Requirements

o   Certificate of Clearance and proof of satisfying the Basic Skills Requirement are required prior to enrolling in the practicum (EDP 641A & B).  For more information regarding the Basic Skills Requirement, please visit:

o   Complete National School Psychology Examination (ETS/PRAXIS II #5402) prior to completion of the program.

o   Candidates are annually evaluated for specific professional competencies.  If a candidate is found insufficient on one or more of the competencies, the candidate may be required to complete additional course work, practicum, fieldwork and/or other activities before being approved for the PPS intern or full credential or the EdS Degree.

Exit Requirements

o   Complete a culminating experience; either comprehensive exam or thesis.

o   Complete Internship Portfolio 

 

School Psychology Specialization and Culminating Activity

Students With Masters

  • Transfer 9 units in a related field of study (i.e., specialization area) PLUS Comprehensive Exam

OR

  • EDP 698 (6 units) and EDP 519 or EDP 595 (or equivalent) PLUS Thesis

Students without MA

  • Choose 3 of the following: EDP 519, 541, 596, 604, 605 PLUS Comprehensive EXAM

OR

  • Choose 1: EDP 595 or 519 PLUS Thesis (and 6 units of EDP 698)
