Schmitt Elementary School - A great place to SERVE!
Schmitt Elementary School, located in Westminster School District, is one of the fastest-improving elementary schools in the State of California. Due to the tireless efforts of our classroom teachers, energetic contributions by our SERVE program volunteers, and hard work of our students we have increased out school's Academic Performance Index (API) from 690 to 809 over the past four years! In addition, we met all of our Adequate Yearly Progress targets for NCLB for the 2010-11 school year - and look forward to achieving the same level of success this year!
Schmitt provides a great training ground for future teachers that are committed to working with English Language Learners from low-income, minority homes. You've studied about the "Achievement Gap" in your academic program at Cal-State Long Beach, I would encourage you to come be a part of closing the achievement gap at Schmitt Elementary School.
Over the past five years, our campus has hosted over 50 volunteers from the SERVE Program. As a SERVE volunteer on the Schmitt Campus, you will have the opportunity to observe our teachers deliver excellent classroom instruction that incorporates the most current research-based instructional strategies. In addition, you will have the opportunity to work with students in both small-group and one-on-one settings to help them become more fluent readers, master the multiplication, and conduct hands-on science experiments.
Many of our SERVE volunteers also complete their student teaching rotations at Schmitt - and several have secured either part-time or full-time teaching jobs as a result of their outstanding performance.
Remember, classroom teachers don't make A difference - they make THE difference in student achievement! Join us for your next SERVE rotation and get your career as an educator off to a great start!
