SERVE Program
Journal, Independent Rotation

Be spontaneous. Write about current feelings. Include quotes, statements, and non-verbal behavior. Each classroom visit should be accompanied by one journal entry.

The prompt completion of a journal is required for all independent rotations.

Prompts to guide your reflection:

Make a sketch of the classroom arrangement or briefly describe the physical environment of the classroom. Describe what is on the classroom walls.

Describe the teaching observed (e.g., lecture, small-group projects, hands-on materials, ways in which the teacher made modifications in teaching to meet student learning needs, etc.)

Describe the learning observed (e.g., is it active and fair? were learning differences accommodated? were students responding to what the teacher want them to learn or are they creating their own ideas for what they want to learn?)

Describe the interactions observed (e.g., how are students interacting with each other? how do teachers and other adults interact with the students?)

Your reflections (e.g., what you learned, any insights, what you would do differently, how could the student learning experiences be improved):

  • What happened that day
  • How you feel about it (How did this experience make you feel about teaching, teaching strategies, your own abilities and how you can best fulfill student needs.)
  • What you learned about yourself
