Welcome to the SERVE Program

Service Experiences for ReVitalizing Education

The SERVE Program provides training and facilitates placement of
CSULB students as tutors in urban classrooms.

CONDITIONS FOR FIELD PLACEMENT

  • University students will work directly with K-12 students in urban classroom settings.
  • School has a diverse student population in terms of language, culture, gender and socio-economic background (minimum 27% of minority student population).
  • Cooperating teacher has a professional teaching credential with a minimum 3 years of teaching experience. Student is not related to cooperating teacher.
  • EDEL 200/380: Student will observe and participate in a regular, self-contained K-8 classroom in a core academic area (not departmentalized, special education, computer labs, after-school programs, etc.).
  • ENG 309: Student will observe and participate during the teaching of language arts, specifically the teaching of writing 50% of the time; 50% may be in literacy-related instruction in other disciplines, i.e. social science.
  • Students in Methods Courses: Student will actively participate with the curriculum and assessments appropriate to the methods course. These are assigned by the university instructor. Student will provide syllabi and assignments to the cooperating teacher.
  • Independent Service Learning: Student may participate in any academic experience with children at risk, including students in special education.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Second semester freshman status or above;
  • GPA of 2.0 or above in all work;
  • Training through SERVE Program or course work;
  • Clearance through SERVE Program;
  • Minimum of 40 hours in the classroom or other assigned site during one semester constitutes one rotation;
  • 4-6 hours per week on site, in at least 2-hour blocks of time;
  • Each service-learning rotation is at a different site, different grade level; at least one rotation is in Long Beach USD for students in the Liberal Studies Program
