Admission

To apply to the Single Subject Credential Program (English), you must take EDSS 300G: Introduction to Teaching (English).

EDSS 300G is a prerequisite to admission to the Single Subject Credential Program (English) and introduces students to the profession of teaching at middle and high schools in the State of California. You will submit your application to the program in EDSS 300G.

You may take EDSS 300G as early as your junior year.

Students who have graduated must apply to the University as post-baccalaureate or credential students or take EDSS 300G through University Extension, preferably the former. Students may apply as graduate students to the University before taking EDSS 300G; however, admission to the University does not constitute admission into the Single Subject Program.

Program Requirements

In EDSS 300G, you will learn about the requirements for the English Single Subject Credential. Briefly, the program requires that you:

  • Possess a cumulative GPA of 2.67 in your undergraduate coursework or 2.75 in the last 60 semester or 90 quarter units
  • Complete a personal interview with English faculty
  • Submit two letters of recommendation
  • Submit a written statement of purpose
  • Submit an application for a Certificate of Clearance to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC)
  • Submit the results of a tuberculosis skin test taken within the last three years
  • Demonstrate proficiency in reading, writing, and communicating orally in English
  • Take the CBEST exam

You will submit your application to the Single Subject Program in EDSS 300G.

You may direct questions concerning admission or credential requirements to the Center for English Education by calling (562) 985-4220.

Appeals related to admissions requirements are considered on an individual basis. Information about admissions appeals can be found by following this link to the "Appeal" page.

Attention!

Beginning with the 2007-08 testing year, there will no longer be printed test bulletins for the CBEST, CSET (including the new bilingual subtests for BCLAD authorization), RICA, and CTEL examinations. Test bulletins will be available on line at the web sites for downloading if a printed copy is desired. We expect that the new bulletins for 2007-08 will be available online after June 2007. Printed test flyers indicating all of the exam dates and registration deadlines, however, will go out as usual.

Candidates are encouraged to use the web sites for exam information and to register for exams.
