Applying to the Family & Consumer Sciences Credential Program

Undergraduate students at CSULB may take courses toward the credential while earning their bachelor's degree. Students who already have a bachelor's degree (from CSULB or elsewhere) will need to apply to the university for admission as a post-baccalaureate student. Note that admission to CSULB as a graduate student does not constitute admission to the Single Subject Credential Program. Admission to the program is a separate process.

Applying to CSULB can be done on-line. Due dates and requirements for admissions can be found on the CSULB website or by visiting the Enrollment Services office. In order to be eligible for post-baccalaureate admissions at CSULB students must have a GPA of 2.5 for the last 60 units of course work. Many students choose to take EDSS 300H through the University Cooperative Extension Services (UCES) office. When students apply to the Credential Program they apply to the university as well.

When students apply to the university and are accepted they must enroll in at least one course the first semester. Failure to take a class during the first semester will result in the student being "dropped" from the university and the student will need to apply again. Students may file for an "educational leave" after they have been enrolled at the university for at least one semester. This is appropriate when taking a semester off from university classes. It keeps files active and enables students to return to the campus without having to reapply.

Applying for admission to the Credential Program is done during the EDSS 300H class. Students cannot apply to the Credential Program without taking the appropriate EDSS 300 course. To be accepted into the Family and Consumer Sciences Credential Program students must have an overall GPA of 2.67 or a GPA of 2.75 in the last 60 semester (or 90 quarter) units of subject matter courses. Students wishing to apply who do not have this GPA will submit a petition which is considered by both the Family and Consumer Sciences Program and the Single Subject Credential Program Petition Committee. When students have been accepted into the program they are eligible to take the other Professional Education courses. They will need to apply to the university at that time if they have not already done so.
