Program Philosophy & Purpose
The Family and Consumer Sciences Credential
Program at CSULB is founded on the philosophy that new teachers must be prepared
to meet the challenges of an interdependent world in the twenty-first century.
Consequently, the program seeks to train and develop teachers with an understanding
of, and sensitivity to, diverse cultures and historical experiences. Additionally,
the program is geared to prepare future teachers with an appreciation of
the rights and responsibilities of citizens in a democratic society, as
well as the importance of ethical behavior and a respect for human rights.
Program Goals
The Family and Consumer Sciences Credential Program at CSULB produces teachers
who:
- are knowledgeable in the subject matter areas of child development and
family relationships, consumerism, foods and nutrition, clothing and textiles,
housing and interior design, and careers in family and consumer sciences;
- are sensitive to issues related to ethics, gender, culture, race, and class;
- are able to apply methods of inquiry used in the study of family and consumer
sciences;
- can instill in students ethical and moral values;
- can challenge students to think critically and reflectively.
