Required Coursework (revised, effective Fall 2009)
For FCSE Majors
The Subject Matter Preparation for the California Single Subject Teaching Credential
in Home Economics includes (a) at least 40 semester units of core course
work in family and consumer sciences subjects and related subjects that are
commonly taught in departmentalized family and consumer sciences classes
in California public schools, and (b) a minimum of 18 semester units of course
work that provides depth and perspective to supplement the essential core
of the program, and (c) 12 units in a concentrated area of study. In addition, there are 16 units in required root disciplinecourses. Requirements are a total of 86 units for core, depth and
perspective, one concentration, and required general education courses.
For Non-FCSE Majors
Students should make an appointment with a credential
advisor to assess their coursework. Students will need to demonstrate their subject
matter competency by taking and passing the California Subject Examination for Teachers (CSET), or taking the courses in which they are deficient. Students may need to take additional
courses to strengthen specific content areas.
