First Steps...So, you have decided you are interested in our program. Now what?Your transcripts from your BA or BS degree may need to be evaluated. Generally CTC approved degree programs in physical education from California State University institutions are accepted by the Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) program at CSULB. (A person with an degree in Kinesiology with a specialzation in Physical Education from an institution like Sacramento State University, would be deemed to have met the subject matter requirements for the PETE program at CSULB. No additional coursework evaluation is necessary.). For non CSU CTC approved programs, faculty review your transcripts and determine which of the course requirements you have met. Courses do not have to be from CSULB in order to "count." Courses from other institutions are examined to determine if they are equivalent to those that are required. You will be given back a checklist showing which courses you still need to take and which requirements are met. [Note: Typically lower division general activity courses do NOT count as transfer credit. Activity specific courses must be equivalent to the Techniques courses offered at CSULB.] Once this is done you will be better able to plan a course of action. To get your transcripts reviewed the best course of action is to bring them to the Kinesiology Office (HHS2) or to Dr. Williams (HHS2 - 207). You can mail your trasnscripts and specifically request an informal evaluation. Please include a letter with your transcripts that requests and informal review and then mail this request to the attention of Dr. Emyr WilliamsPhysical Education Single Subject Coordinator Include a current mailing address. Be sure to include transcripts from all schools you've attended. For a listing of the courses required of CSULB Physical Education Teacher Education students click on the Required Coursework link on the left of this page. After you get the results of your transcript evaluation feel free to set up an appointment to plan a logical sequence of courses. Note: the Kinesiology department does accept any other California State University CTC accredited Physical Education program and / or the CSET (Physical Education) as demonstration of subject matter competency instead of courseware. Eventually you will need to apply to the university. This can be done on-line. If you are only planning on taking a single class (EDSS300P) to see if teaching is for you, you might consider taking the course through University Extension. After you decide to apply to the program you will need to apply to the university as well. GPA requirements for admission to the CSULB as a graduate student/credential student is 2.5 while a GPA of 2.67 is required for the Single Subject Credential Program. Please note, being accepted to the university does not guarantee admission into the Credential Program. The first education class to take is EDSS 300P, Introduction to Teaching Physical Education.. This course meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM. This course is designed to introduce you to middle school and high school Physical Education teaching. There are 45 hours of observation and field work at local middle schools and high schools. One of the goals of the class is to help you decide if teaching is really what you want to do. During this course you will also apply to the Single Subject Credential Program. It is strongly recommended that you also take KIN 380 Principles, Organization and Management of Secondary School Physical Education. This course is offered Mondays/Wednesdays from 10am-12pm and is a complimentary course to EDSS 300P. |
