Required (Subject Matter) Coursework (Physical Education Teacher Education - Undergraduate Program @ CSULB) for undergraduates completing their subject matter requirements through a degree option in Physical Education Teacher Education at CSULB.

 

The listing of courses below outlines the Physical Education Teacher Education course requirements for undergraduates meeting the Secondary Physical Education Requirements in the Kinesiology Department by completing a Physical Education Teacher Education emphasis degree at CSULB.

The Lower Division & Upper Division Requirements are what CSULB undergraduates complete for their Bachelor's degree.

By completing the above courses CSULB undergraduates satisfy the "Subject Matter" requirements.

Students who completed their undergraduate degrees at other institutions would meet SUBJECT MATTER COMPETENCY by

  1. Obtaining their Bachelor's degree in Kinesiology with a specialization in Physical Education from a CSU Physical Education CTC approved program
  2. Obtain their Bachelor's degree in Kinesiology from another institutions and through transcript evaluation and/or additional coursework, satisfy the subject matter requirements of the courses listed above.
  3. Pass all sections of the CSET Physical Education Examination & complete the CSULB PETE program's proficiency requirements

Credential Program Requirements (Physical Education)

Prerequisite Course - EDSS 300P - Introduction to Teaching Physical Education (Required for actual admission to the credential program at CSULB. Can be taken the first semester enrolled as a credential student at CSULB). This course is offered Tuesdays/Thursdays from 10am-12pm during the Spring and Fall Semesters. This course is a pre-requisite course for all the CORE courses listed below. For students intending to complete their subject matter requirements through the CSET examination, it is stronly suggested that they take KIN 380 (Principles, Organization and Management of Secondary School Physical Education) Mondays/Wednesdays 10am-12pm during the Spring and Fall Semesters.

Co-Requisite Coursework (There are no pre-requisites except for junior/senior standing, for these co-requisite courses)

  • HSC 411B - Health Science for Secondary Teachers
  • EDSP 350 - Education for Exceptional Individuals
  • EDP 301 or 302 or 305 Child/Adolescent Development/ Educational Psychology
  • Level I Technology Course - Suggested KIN 354 - Technology in Physical Education or ETEC 444

CORE Coursework

  • EDSE 435 - U.S. Secondary Schools: Intercultural Educaiton
  • EDSE 436 - Curriculum, Instruction, Assessment & Classroom Management (Is no longer available in the summer. Only offered Spring and Fall)
  • EDSE 457 - Reading and Writing in Secondary Schools
  • EDSS 450P - Curriculum and Methods in Teaching Physical Education (Only offered Spring and Fall Semesters, Wednesdays 4-8pm). [MUST BE SUBJECT MATTER COMPETENT TO ENROLL]

Supervised Field Experiences (Student Teaching - 1 semester)

  • EDSS 472 A, B, C - Student Teaching
  • EDSS 473P - Student Teaching Seminar Physical Education

Most of the credential program courses are offered during the evening (except EDSS 300P T/Th 10am-12pm)

Currently, most of the Co-requisite and Core courses are offered in either Winter and Summer sessions (except for EDSS 300P, EDSS 450P, and EDSE 436 which are only offered Fall and Spring).
