Preliminary Credential

SB2042 Preliminary Single Subject Credential Program In Music

Students admitted to the program after August 31, 2003 follow this program plan.

Prerequisite: EDSS 300N, Introduction to Teaching (Music). [Application to the credential program is done as part of this course.] Please note: this course is only offered during the spring semester.

Co-requisites: Can be taken prior to, concurrent with, or after EDSS 300N. Must be completed prior to student teaching. HSC 411B Health Science for Secondary Teachers EdP 350 Education of Exceptional Individuals EdP 301 or 302 or 305 Child/Adolescent Developmental/Educational Psychology Level I Technology - can be met by course or exam (SSAT in Preliminary Educational Technology). MUS 125T meets the requirement for music students or all students may take ETEC 444.

Core Requirements: Students must be admitted to the Single Subject Credential Program in order to take these courses. EDSE courses are offered during Summer Sessions I and II. EDSE 435 U.S. Secondary Schools: Intercultural Education EDSE 436 Curriculum, Instruction, Assessment, and Classroom Management EDSE 457 Reading and Writing in the Secondary Schools EDSS 450N Curriculum and Methods in Teaching (Music) [Offered only during the fall semester.]

Supervised Field Experience: Advancement to student teaching is required. All coursework must be completed. EDSS 472 A, B, C Student Teaching EDSS 473 Student Teaching Seminar OR EDSS 572 A, B, C Intern Student Teaching EDSS 572 Intern Student Teaching Seminar.


The Preliminary Credential is a five-year, non-renewable credential. Requirements include:

  • A BA, BS or BM from an accredited institution.
  • Pass CBEST exam (this can be accomplished in EDSS 300N, Introduction to Teaching-Music, the credential program entry-level course).
  • Pass character clearance (fingerprint background check - completed in EDSS 300N).
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the U.S. Constitution (by course or exam).
  • Demonstrate subject matter competence in the authorized teaching area (by completing university course work in a CTC-approved music education program, passing the PRAXIS* and SSAT in music**, or by transcript review.
  • Demonstrate Level I computer proficiency by exam (CSET Technology in Education) or course work (MUS 125T or ETEC 444)

* PRAXIS II: # 30111 (Concepts and Processes) and #20112 (Musical Analysis).

**The SSAT (Test Code 013) in music is scheduled to be replaced by the CSET exam in music, fall 2003. Please check the CSET website for current information.
