Petitions

Appeals to program decisions, or requests for Single Subject Credential Program policy waivers, are made by filing a written appeal to the Single Subject Credential Program Petition Committee.  The Committee reviews the written statement and supporting evidence.  After the review, the Committee renders its final decision.  Examples of petitionable items include:

  1. Minimum grade point average required for program admission;
  2. Completing prerequisite course EDSS 300 prior to enrollment in core courses (EDSS 450 and EDSE courses);
  3. Completing all program courses prior to student teaching;
  4. Equivalency for courses taken elsewhere or more than seven years ago;
  5. Graduate credit for education courses taken in the senior year;
  6. Student teaching placement at a private school or using employment (other than University Internship) to fulfill student teaching requirement;

Consult the Single Subject Credential Program office for items not listed here.

Petitions are heard monthly by the Single Subject Petiton Committee during the fall and spring semesters. Petitions must be submitted one week prior to the Petition Committee meeting.  Petition Committee meetings, deadlines and guidelines are avilable at the Single Subject Credential Program Office (ED1-67) and website (www.ced.csulb.edu/single-subject).  To submit a petition, candidates should make an appointment with a Single Subject advisor to discuss the type of petition and any supporting documents that are needed.

How Do I Petition?

  1. Obtain the appropriate petition from the Single Subject Credential Office or the Single Subject web site. (Attached Below)
  2. Compose a written statement presenting your situation and reason for your request in full. This is your opportunity to provide the committee with ANY and ALL information that will assist them in determining whether or not an exception to SSCP policy should be made for your situation.
  3. Attach any materials that support your written statement, such as transcripts (unofficial or photocopies accepted) CBEST/CSET scores, letters of support, verification of enrollment in supplemental courses, etc
  4. Meet with your subject area advisor to discuss your petition and obtain his/her recommendation (approve, deny, or no recommendation) and signature.
  5. Submit signed petition and materials to the Single Subject Credential Office, ED1-67 (see deadlines above).  The Single Subject office strongly recommends that you speak with a Single Subject Advisor in addition to your subject area advisor before submitting your petition, but you are not required to do so.

How Will I Know the Result of My Petition?

A letter explaining the committee’s decision will be mailed to you 1-2 weeks after the committee meeting.  If you would like to know the outcome of your petition before then, you may call the Single Subject Credential Office.  Please allow 1-2 business days for a response.
