Social Science Credential Program Goals

Program Philosophy & Purpose

The social science credential program at CSULB is founded on the philosophy that new teachers must be prepared to meet the challenges of an interdependent world in the twenty-first century. Consequently, the program seeks to train and develop teachers with an understanding of, and sensitivity to, diverse cultures and historical experiences. Additionally, the program is geared to prepare future teachers with an appreciation of the rights and responsibilities of citizens in a democratic society, as well as the importance of ethical behavior and a respect for human rights.

Program Goals

The social science credential program at CSULB intends to produce teachers who

  • are familiar with the main currents of world and U.S. history, who understand the basic facts and theories of economic, social, intellectual, cultural and political life, who are geographically literate, and who comprehend basic concepts inherent in the behavorial sciences;
  • are sensitive to issues related to ethics, gender, culture, race, and class;
    are able to apply methods of inquiry used in the study of history and other social science disciplines;
  • can imbue students with democratic and ethical values; and
  • can challenge students to think critically and analytically.
