BCLAD Programs

The California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) has defined two broad areas of knowledge which must be demonstrated by teachers in bilingual programs:

MSCP Domains 1-3

These three domains are embedded inthe 2042 MSCP program for all candidates (and were also included in CLAD programs authorized by the Ryan Act). They include:

  • Domain 1: Language
Linguistics, first and second language acquisition
  • Domain 2: Teaching
Principles and methods of teaching English to English Language Learners
  • Domain 3: Culture
Cultural diversity and equity in education

BCLAD Domains 4-6

Three additional domains of knowledge must be added in BCLAD programs:

  • Domain 4: Teaching
Principles of bilingual education and methods of teaching two languages
  • Domain 5: Culture
The culture of the specific population of emphasis
  • Domain 6: Language
Professional comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing in languge of emphasis

For CSULB students, pathways to add the BCLAD emhasis are available in various choices for the Spanish-English BCLAD and for Asian Language-English BCLAD.  In both language areas, there are choices for preservice teachers (those earning a preliminary credential) and for inservice teachers (those who have already completed a preliminary credential).
