California State University Asian BCLAD Admissions & Requirements

IS THERE A NEED FOR TEACHERS WITH BCLAD EMPHASIS CREDENTIALS IN ASIAN LANGUAGES?

As enrollment of Asian Pacific American (APA) students has grown to 11% of the California school population, school districts continue to search for Asian BCLAD Emphasis credentialed teachers. To help meet the increased demand for qualified Asian language bilingual/bicultural teachers, six Los Angeles Area California State Universities (CSUs) formed an Asian BCLAD Consortium. The Consortium developed a unique inter-campus collaborative program through which qualified candidates may earn a BCLAD Emphasis in Cambodian, Cantonese, Korean, Mandarin or Vietnamese while completing a preliminary credential at their home campus.

HOW CAN I EARN A TEACHING CREDENTIAL WITH AN ASIAN LANGUAGE BCLAD EMPHASIS THROUGH THE CONSORTIUM?

Candidates seeking an Asian language BCLAD Emphasis must be enrolled in a preliminary 2042 credential program at one of the six CSU Asian BCLAD Consortium campuses: Dominguez Hills, Fullerton, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Northridge, or Pomona. (Also see Asian BCLAD Documents and Forms.)

While completing all requirements for the 2042 preliminary credential at their home campus, candidates fulfill four additional requirements to earn an Asian Language BCLAD Emphasis.

The four additional requirements are:

  • Successful completion of a target language literacy and content methods course.
  • Successful completion of a target language group culture course.
  • Passage of CSET LOTE subtest of Language and Communication Skills in a target Asian language.
  • Demonstration of teaching competence in a target language bilingual setting (minimum 45 hours).

Note: The Consortium offers Cambodian, Cantonese, Korean, Mandarin and Vietnamese BCLAD Emphases for Multiple Subjects preliminary credential programs. It also offers a Korean BCLAD Emphasis with a Single Subject Preliminary Credential.

The appropriate methods and culture classes for each target language will be offered at least once per year at one of the six Consortium campuses. Participants may enroll concurrently at the home campus and the Consortium campus offering the approved target language course work. Appropriate bilingual teaching experiences will be identified on an individual basis by the Asian BCLAD campus advisor.

Upon successful completion of the four Asian BCLAD Consortium requirements in addition to all 2042 requirements
