2042 Preliminary MSCP Asian Languages/English BCLAD - Course of StudyBilingual Cross-cultural Language and Academic Development (BCLAD) programs prepare students for teaching in Bilingual Education and English Language Development settings where an Asian Language (Cantonese, Khmer, Korean, Mandarin, or Vietnamese) is required for instructional support and communication with parents. BCLAD includes all the general requirements in the 2042 Preliminary MSCP plus teaching pedagogy and practicum in a second language, culture of emphasis, and fluency in the target language (by examination). Six Los Angeles area California State Universities (Dominguez Hills, Fullerton, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Northridge, and Pomona), which have formed the Asian BCLAD Consortium, offer this unique inter-campus collaborative program. (Total units: 46 plus BCLAD Test). Courses are listed in recommended sequence. Prerequisites (4 units)These two courses are designed to be taken concurrently. However, a student who has already completed EDEL 380 may apply to the MSCP and take EDP 303 independently.
Corequisite Courses (5 units)These courses may be taken prior to being admitted to the MSCP. They are listed in recommended sequence.
Asian BCLAD Requirements (6 units)Most Language and Bilingual Pedagogy courses may be taken prior to being admitted to the MSCP and must be completed prior to student teaching. The BCLAD exam may be completed during student teaching.
Subject Specific Pedagogy Courses (15 units)Students must be admitted to the Multiple Subject Credential Program to take the following pedagogy courses. At least one pedagogy course must be taken OFF-CAMPUS at an elementary school site during daytime school hours, and at least one must be taken ON-CAMPUS. (Note: The Off- campus requirement is temporarily suspended for those student teaching in 2005.) It is recommended that EDEL 442 and EDEL 452 be taken concurrently.
Student Teaching(16 units)One semester before taking EDEL 482B, students must attend a Student Teaching Application Meeting and submit an application to student teach at the beginning of that semester. BCLAD student teachers must meet the alternate grade placement requirement, and their BCLAD experience must be approved by the school principal, University Supervisor, and BCLAD Advisor. Students must participate in the required orientation series the week prior to the beginning of the student teaching semester. Student teaching is a full-day, semester-long responsibility.
