BCLAD Through Examinations

Teachers who have completed a 2042 Preliminary Multiple Subject, a Ryan CLAD Multiple Subject, a 2042 Single-Subject, or a Ryan CLAD Single Subject Credential may add the BCLAD by passing state BCLAD Examinations #4, #5, and #6 (corresponding to BCLAD domains) for a language and culture of emphasis. Examinations are available for Spanish, Asian languages, and others.

Applications, dates, location, descriptions, and study guides are available through

National Evaluation Systems (NES)
P. O. Box 340819
Sacramento, CA 95834-0819
(196) 928-4002.

Information is also on their website at http://www.clad.nesinc.com (Spanish study guides are available online and others are mailed. For further information, click examinations desired, ignoring "Spanish" on the homepage.)

To Add CLAD

Teachers with a credential which did not include content in Domains #1, #2, and #3 may additionally take examinations related to each of these domains to fulfill a district requirement for a CLAD credential. See the NES website noted above.

Additionally, University College and Extension Services (UCES) in partnership with the Center for Language Minority Education and Research (CLMER) and CSULB academic departments offers a continuous schedule of specialized courses leading toward the CLAD Certificate through supplementary coursework. Intensive courses are offered each July. Courses include:

  • EDP 432 Social and Cultural Diversity in Educational Settings (3 units)
  • EDP 439 SDAIE: Specially Designed Academic Instruction in English (3 units)
  • EDP 454 Development of Communications Skills in Bilingual Contexts (3 units)
  • EDP 485 Theoretical Foundations of Language Minority Education (3 units)

The CLAD Certificate authorizes English-speaking teachers to instruct students who are limited in their English language proficiency in "English Language Development" and core content, through a "sheltered" mode in English.

Teachers from any district are eligible for the CLAD Certificate.
