MSCP BCLAD Requirements
Candidates desiring to add the
BCLAD emphasis to their credential must meet all the requirements for
the credential, including all those pertaining to Domains
1, 2, and 3 which are embedded in the 2042 MSCP program design. Additionally,
they must meet the requirements for Domains 4, 5,
and 6.
Program choices are available
for Spanish/English and for various
Asian Languages/English.
The following requirements are
applicable for all students in an MSCP BCLAD program choice:
- Meet with appropriate BCLAD advisor as soon as possible
for the following purposes:
- Plan your program (advisors have information about course equivalencies)
- Obtain an initial language assessment
- Request that your BCLAD advisor sign your MSCP Application
Form
- Submit application to the MSCP
Application form must include BCLAD advisor's signature to verify that
you qualify for admission to the bilingual portion of the program.
All prerequisites and deadlines for the MSCP program apply.
- Complete MSCP course of study
All requirements for the MSCP program related to courses (including
student teaching) and deadlines apply. (See details in appropriate
program of study.)
- Complete BCLAD requirements
Courses applicable to the culture of emphasis (Domain 5), the language
of emphasis (Domain 6), and the bilingual pedagogy course (Domain 4)
may be taken before admission to the MSCP program. All appropriate
coursework for the BCLAD and at least the
oral or written section of the BCLAD Test #6
must be completed prior to student teaching. All sections of
BCLAD Test #6 must be completed before completing the BCLAD Credential.
These sections of the exam may be completed during student teaching.
The bilingual pedagogy course is included in the requirement for a B
average in pedagogy courses. Students must earn at least a C in
culture and language courses.
- Complete Student Teaching
BCLAD candidates must complete an approved Student Teaching
practicum, including demonstration of teaching competence in the language
of emphasis (45 hours minimum for Asian Languages; 20 hours minimum
for Spanish). Both primary language instruction and English Language
Development must be demonstrated and observed during the practicum.
Candidates participating in Student Teaching while employed in a program
approved classroom as an emergency permit teacher must complete
a minimum of 20 hours in an alternate grade
level second assignment. The school principal, University Supervisor,
and BCLAD Advisor must approve the use of instructional languages and
plan for alternate grade level assignment.
- Pass BCLAD Test #6
Candidates must pass all four parts
(comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing) of the State BCLAD Examination
#6 in the language of emphasis. This examination is required whether
or not they have taken advanced language courses or district-administered
language tests.

- Sections of EDEL 442, 462, and 472 with footnote #53 are recommended*

* Bilingual sections of pedagogy courses (marked with Footnote #53) are
recommended as they offer demonstrations and assignments in Spanish and
English and provide enrichment opportunities for bilingual candidates
to practice primary language pedagogy. Essential content and readings
may be done in English; these sections are open to all MSCP candidates.
