Spanish-English BCLAD ProgramsThe Spanish-English BCLAD (Bilingual Cross-Cultural, Language and Academic Development) emphasis added to the Multiple Subject Credential authorizes holders to teach in classrooms where Spanish is used for instruction and in situations where teachers use Spanish for explanation, preview-review, and interaction with families. In addition, teachers completing BCLAD may teach in English Language Development and general education classrooms. Candidates in Spanish-English programs must demonstrate the ability to communicate fluently in Spanish by the end of the program. Bilingual communication and teaching competence are assessed through courses, examination, and the student teaching practicum. Program offerings in Spanish-English are available both for those earning a preliminary credential (preservice programs) and for those who have already earned a preliminary credential (inservice programs).
