MSCP Spanish/English BCLAD Internship Program Course of Study

This variation of the Preliminary Multiple Subject Teaching Credential Preparation Program is designed for full-time teachers in districts with which CSULB has an intern agreement and a contract who additionally wish to add BCLAD to their credential.  All students in this program must be employed by the district as the full-time teacher of record in a multiple subjects self-contained classroom and have demonstrated subject matter competence by having passed the CSET, and they must meet all requirements both for the Internship program and for the Spanish BCLAD. (Total units: 40 plus BCLAD requirements)

Courses are listed in recommended sequence.

Pre-Application Requirements

  • Demonstrate Subject Matter Competence by passing CSET
  • Meet U.S. Constitution requirement
  • Pass CBEST
  • Hold Bachelor's degree
  • Be assigned full-time to teach in a self-contained K-8 multiple subjects classroom in a district with which CSULB has an intern agreement and contract
  • Meet cumulative GPA of 2.67 or 2.75 in last 60 semester units
  • Interview with Intern Director and Spanish BCLAD Advisor

Prerequisites (4 units)

These two courses are designed to be taken concurrently. However, a student who has already completed EDEL 380 may apply to the MSCP and take EDP 303 independently.

  • EDEL 380 - Teaching and Learning in a Democratic Society (3 units)
    Students must earn a B or better grade in this course to be admitted to the MSCP
  • ED P 303 - Preparing to Teach Special Populations in the General Education Classroom (1 unit)
  • Submit Admission to the MSCP

Corequisite Courses (5 units)

These two courses may be taken prior to being admitted to the MSCP.

  • EDEL 413 - Developmentally Appropriate Teaching Practices (2 units)
  • EDEL / EDP / LING 431 - Cultural and Linguistic Diversity in Schools (3 units)

BCLAD Requirements (2-5 units)

Courses may be taken prior to being admitted to the MSCP and must be completed prior to student teaching.  Exams may be completed during student teaching.

  • Bilingual Teaching Pedagogy
    EDEL 452B Teaching Reading in Spanish and English (1 unit) and
    EDEL 473B Content Methods in Bilingual Settings (1 unit)
  • Culture of Emphasis
    BCLAD Exam #5 or
    CHLS 350 Latino Population in the US (3 units)
  • Language of Emphasis
    BCLAD Exam #6

Subject Specific Pedagogy Courses (15 units)

Students must be admitted to the Multiple Subject Credential Program to take the following pedagogy courses.  BCLAD Interns are exempt from the OFF-CAMPUS requirement.

  • EDEL 442 - Teaching and Learning Language Arts, K-8 (3 units)
  • EDEL 452 - Teaching and Learning Reading, K-8 (3 units)
  • EDEL 462 - Teaching and Learning Mathematics, K-8 (3 units)
  • EDEL 472 - Teaching and Learning History-Social Science in Diverse Classrooms (3 units)
  • EDEL 475 - Teaching and Learning Science, K-8 (3 units)

Student Teaching (16 units)

One semester before taking EDEL 472A and 472B, students must attend a Student Teaching Application Meeting and submit an application to student teach at the beginning of that semester.   Students must participate in the required orientation series.  Student teaching is a full-day, semester-long responsibility.  Interns must meet the alternate grade placement requirement, and their BCLAD experience must be approved by the school principal, University Supervisor, and BCLAD Advisor.
