ITEP-MSCP Spanish-English BCLAD - Course of Study

This new program relates to the College mission to value diversity and prepare students for a diverse world.  With a Spanish Bilingual Cross-cultural Language and Academic Development [BCLAD] credential, beginning teachers will be able better to meet the needs of children in urban classroom settings and provide leadership in public schools and communities  In addition, competence in teaching literacy in two languages will have a positive impact on preparing children for global citizenship. 

Courses are listed in recommended sequence.

Prerequisites (9 units plus an interview)

  • EDEL 200 - Introduction to the Education Profession (3 units)
    Students must earn a B or better grade in this course to be admitted to the MSCP
  • Complete Application to the MSCP-ITEP
    Advisement is provided in EDEL 200
  • Preliminary Interview with Spanish BCLAD Advisor
    Signature required on application form

Corequisite Courses (12 units)

EDP 180, EDP 301 / HDEV 307I, and LING 329 / EDP 454 may be taken either before or after admission to MSCP. All these courses must be completed prior to student teaching

  • EDP 180 - Family, School Partnerships (3 units)
  • EDP 301 - Child Development and Learning: A Cross-Cultural Perspective (3 units) or HDEV 307I (3 units)
  • LING 329 (3 units) or EDP 454 (3 units)
  • EDEL 300 - Cultural and Linguistic Diversity in Schools (3 units)

Spanish BCLAD Requirements

(15 units plus BCLAD subtest #6 in Spanish)

Courses in this group except EDEL 452B may be taken before admission to the MSCP Program and must be completed prior to student teaching. Admission to MSCP required to take EDEL 452B; this course may be taken concurrently with one semester of student teaching. The BCLAD exam may be completed during student teaching.   • LING 329 or EDP 454 - Domains 1 and 4 (listed above as corequisite course)
  • EDP / LING 485 (3 units) - Domains 2 and 4
    This course is a choice in Language and Literacy Concentration
  • EDEL 452B - Teaching Reading in Spanish and English, K-8 (BCLAD) (3 units) - Domain 4
  • CHLS 340 or 350 (3 units) - Domain 5
  • SPAN 300 (6 units) - Language of Emphasis - Domain 6
    CHLS 332 (3 units) recommended - Domain 6
  • BCLAD Examination #6 for Spanish (all four parts) - Language Proficiency Exam

Subject-specific Pedagogy Courses (15 units)

Students must be admitted to the Multiple Subject Credential Program to take the following pedagogy courses. It is recommended that EDEL 442 and EDEL 452 be taken concurrently.

  • EDEL 442 - Teaching and Learning Language Arts, K-8 (3 units)
  • EDEL 452 - Teaching and Learning Reading, K-8 (3 units)
  • EDEL 462 - Teaching and Learning Mathematics, K-8 (3 units)
  • EDEL 472 - Teaching and Learning History-Social Science in Diverse Classrooms (3 units)
  • EDEL 475 - Teaching and Learning Science, K-8 (3 units)

    Course substitutions:
    EDEL 453A, EDEL 453B, and EDEL 453C may be substituted for EDEL 442 and EDEL 452
    EDEL 471 nd EDEL 473A may be substituted for EDEL 472

Student Teaching (16 units)

One semester before taking EDEL 482D and 482F, students must attend a Student Teaching Application Meeting and submit an application to student teach at the beginning of that semester. BCLAD student teachers must meet the alternate grade placement requirement, and their BCLAD experience must be approved by the school principal, University Supervisor, and BCLAD Advisor. Students must participate in the required orientation series the week prior to the beginning of the student teaching semester. Student teaching is a half-day, two-semester responsibility.

  • EDEL 482D - Student Teaching in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Classrooms (8 units)
  • EDEL 482F - Student Teaching in Spanish Dual Language Classrooms (8 units)
