2042 Preliminary MSCP Spanish/English BCLAD - Course of StudyThe Spanish/English Bilingual Cross-cultural Language and Academic Development (BCLAD) programs prepare students for teaching in Bilingual Education and English Language Development settings where Spanish is required for instructional support and communication with parents. BCLAD includes all the general requirements in the 2042 Preliminary MSCP plus teaching pedagogy and practicum in a second language, culture of emphasis (by coursework or examination), and fluency of Spanish (by examination). (Total units: 43 plus culture and language of emphasis). Courses are listed in recommended sequence. Prerequisites (4 units)These two courses are designed to be taken concurrently. However, a student who has already completed EDEL 380 may apply to the MSCP and take EDP 303 independently.
Corequisite Courses (8 units)These courses may be taken concurrently with prerequisites prior to being admitted to the MSCP. They must be completed prior to student teaching.
Subject Specific Pedagogy Courses (15 units)Students must be admitted to the Multiple Subject Credential Program to take the following pedagogy courses. 150 hours as a teacher, assistant, or volunteer in a multilingual setting is required in lieu of an off-campus daytime pedagogy course. It is recommended that EDEL 442 and EDEL 452B be taken concurrently.
Additional Spanish BCLAD Requirements (0-18 units)Course work must be completed prior to student teaching; CTEL/BCLAD examinations may be completed during student teaching.
Recommended preparation for Language of Emphasis: Spanish 300, 312, 313 and 322 (12 units) Recommended preparation for language acquisition background: LING 329 (3 units) or EDP 454 (3 units) Student Teaching (16 units)One semester before taking EDEL 482B or C, students must attend a Student Teaching Application Meeting and submit an application to student teach at the beginning of that semester. BCLAD student teachers must meet the alternate grade placement requirement, and their BCLAD experience must be approved by the school principal, University Supervisor, and BCLAD Advisor. Students must participate in the required orientation series. Student teaching is a full-day, semester-long responsibility. Student teaching while employed is available; see bilingual advisor for details.
Students may wish to consider other alternatives for completing the CSULB BCLAD Emphasis. |
