M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction, Elementary Course of Study

The following curriculum is effective Fall 2004. Students currently in the Elementary C & I Masters Program continue under the requirements of the program to which they were admitted

Methods of Social Science Inquiry (6 units)

  1. EDP 400 Introduction to Educational Measurement & Statistics
    and one of
  2. EDP 520 Research Methods
    or
  3. EDCI 533 Action Research Methods: Teachers as Inquirers

Core Requirements (15 units from the following)

  1. EDCI 500 Studies in Curriculum and Instruction
  2. EDCI 505 History of Education in the U. S.
  3. EDCI 530 Intercultural Education: U. S. and Global Perspectives
  4. EDCI 625 Analysis of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment
  5. EDCI 695 Seminar in Curriculum and Instruction

Concentration (9 units)

Candidates select an area of concentration, in consultation with the program Advisor, tailored to their professional goals.  A Concentration must follow a pattern or theme; a disparate set of unrelated courses is not a concentration. Concentrations may follow one of the following patterns, or may be uniquely devised by the candidate.   Candidates submit a written statement containing a coherent rationale for and describing the concentration sequence.   Candidates are responsible for taking prerequisite courses.

  1. Advanced Methods Courses (EDRG 540, EDCI 560, EDCI 570)
  2. Educational Technology (e.g., EDRG 543, EDP 542, ETEC 523, ETEC 525, ETEC 530, ETEC 551, ETEC 553, ETEC 623).
  3. Advanced course work in a self-selected Concentration chosen in consultation with the Advisor (e.g., professional clear credential courses, courses in social and multicultural foundations).
  4. Research methods courses in preparation for the thesis (e.g., EDP 696, EDP 595, EDP 596, EDCI 533).

Capstone Experience (0-6 units)

  1. Comprehensive Written Examination (0 units)
    The Comprehensive Exam is open to candidates who have advanced to candidacy and completed all course work. Candidates must file for the exam by October 1 for spring exam and by March 1 for the fall exam. Candidates should attend the exam preparation workshop during the semester in which they take the exam.
    OR
  2. Thesis (3 – 6 units)
    1. EDCI 698 Thesis (only for candidates writing a thesis; 3 units per semester while writing the thesis for a total of 6 units)
    2. Additional research methods course(s), if necessary, relevant to the project and to be determined by the candidate and the thesis advisor. These courses may be the candidate’s Concentration, or may be additional.

Course Sequence:

Candidates should take EDCI 500 and EDP 400 in their first semester as foundation courses. They are encouraged to take EDCI 505 and the remaining three units of social science inquiry in the second semester, followed by EDCI 530, EDCI 625, and EDCI 695 (recommended to be taken in the final semester). 

Concentration courses may be taken at any time. All candidates should meet with the program Advisor to discuss an efficient program plan.
