Dual Language Development Program Description
The Masters of Arts in Education with a specialization in Dual Language
Development provides advanced preparation in curriculum, instruction,
and assessment, emphasizing theory, research, and classroom practices related to dual language development.
Prerequisites:
- A valid teaching credential preferably with a Bilingual, Cross-cultural, Language, and Academic Development (BCLAD) emphasis or by permission from the DLD Coordinator, Trini Lewis
- Demonstration of a bilingual proficiency, or six college semester units
of a language other than English, or verified equivalent.
- Admission to graduate status at the University
- An autobiographical essay
- 2-3 letters of recommendation
Requirements (10-8 classes)
1. Dual Language Development Core (15 units):
- EDCI 541 Multicultural Methods and Curriculum in Language Arts: Primary
Language Instruction
- EDRG 551B Literacy Assessment for Bilingual Students
- EDCI 532, Socialization of Literacy in More Than One Language
- LING 650; Seminar in Bilingualism
- And one of the following courses:
- EDCI 530 Intercultural Education:
U.S. and Global Perspectives
- EDP 574 Sociological Foundations
of Education
- EDP 672 Language and Educational Policies
2. Methods of Social Science Inquiry (6 units):
- EDP 400 Introduction to Educational Measurement and Statistics
- EDCI 533 Action Research: Teachers as Inquirers
3. Concentration (6 units):
- 6 units of approved electives which can also be selected/transferred from credential or undergraduate courses
work
- Capstone Requirement (3-6 units):
- One of the following chosen in consultation with the DLD advisor: EDCI
695 and Comprehensive Examination (3 units) through completion and presentation
of an action research project; or EDCI 698 and Thesis (6 units)
