M.A. in Dual Language DevelopmentThe Master’s Degree in Elementary Education, Dual Language Development Specialization, is a 30-36 unit program in advanced study of bilingualism / bilingual education and the education of language minority students. The program is designed for teachers with BCLAD or CLAD certification (or equivalent) who wish to deepen their understanding of programs of instruction, assessment, and policies relating to education of English language learners. A cornerstone of the program is the completion of a classroom action research project, designed to hone research skills while improving student outcomes. The program consists of 15 units of core coursework, 6 units of methods of social science inquiry, 6 units of selected electives, and a capstone seminar of action research supervision. Candidates advance through the two-year program with a cohort, taking most of the coursework off-campus. Candidates are admitted for Fall semester only. Two separate applications a re required: one to the university and one to the program. Program application materials and guidelines are available online or in the Graduate Studies Office (ED 1-Room 7; 562-985-8476). Applications to the university are available through CSU Mentor or at Enrollment Services in Brotman Hall (562-985-4571). A valid multiple subject or elementary teaching credential, or permission of the program advisor, is a prerequisite. Candidates must be able to demonstrate proficiency in a second language, or have completed 6 units of language study, or equivalent. In the Dual Language Development program, a minimum of 21 units must be taken at the 500 level or above; a minimum of 21 units must be take at CSULB; a maximum of 6 units may be taken through University College and Extension Services.
