Early Childhood Education Course of Study

The Master's of Art in Education, Early Childhood Education program requires a minimum of 30 units with at least 21 units in the 500/600 level series at this University. In consultation with the Advisor, students will select a comprehensive examination track, thesis track, or project track. For academic advisement, please contact the program advisor:

Prerequisites

  • EDP 301 - Child Development and Learning: A Cross-cultural Perspective (1-3 units) OR
    HDEV 307I - Human Development: Childhood through Adolescence (3 units) OR
    PSY 361 - Psychology of Child and Adolescent Development (3 units) OR
    equivalent
  • EDEL 420 - Teaching and Learning in the Kindergarten and Primary Grades
  • EDEL 482 - Student Teaching in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Classrooms OR
    One year of documented and approved teaching experience

Note: Prerequisite courses, EDP 301 and EDEL 420, if not taken before, can be taken within the first year of your enrollment into the program

  • EDP 400 - Introduction to Educational Measurement & Statistics

One of the following (3 units):

  • EDP 520 - Educational Research (Comprehensive Exam Track) OR
  • EDP 595 - Qualitative Research Methods (Comprehensive Exam Track)OR
  • EDP 696 - Thesis Study: Plan Development and Organizing Aspects (thesis track)

One of the following chosen in consultation with the program advisor (3-6 units):

  • EDEC 695 - Seminar in Teacher Education for the Early Childhood Education Specialization and Written Comprehensive Examination (3 units)OR
  • EDEC 698 - Thesis (6 units)

  • EDEC 521 - Historical and Contemporary Perspective in Early Childhood Education

  • EDEC 523 - Leadership, Advocacy and Supervision of Early Childhood Programs
  • EDEC 526 - Advanced Study of Infant and Toddler Programs
  • EDEC 621 - Research Seminar in Early Childhood Education
  • EDEC 622 - Seminar in Early Childhood Care and Education: International Perspectives
