Multiple Subject Credential - CSET Subject Matter Competence

The State of California requires that elementary teaching credential candidates demonstrate adequate subject knowledge in all the areas of subject matter they will teach. This is called the "subject matter competence requirement."

You are required to pass the CSET: California Subject Examinations for Teachers

This test must be passed prior to admittance to program for those in the Multiple Subject Credential program. Since it takes one month to receive scores from this test, students should plan to take it as soon as possible to avoid delays in applying to the program. As a suggestion, please allow yourself a flexible timeline to take and pass the exam before applying to the MSCP. This could mean taking (or retaking) the CSET on more than one scheduled testing date. (Some students have found this exam significantly more challenging to pass than the CBEST).

To assist students in passing the CSET, the program offers:

  • Free CSET Preparation Workshops (offered twice per year, during the beginning of the Fall and Spring semesters)
  • Study guides to check out and use in the Advising Center
  • Consult the Teacher Preparation Advising Center in ED1-67 for other preparation options such as the Bobrow Test through UCES.

The California Commission on Teacher Credentialing states that passing CSET examination scores are valid for FIVE YEARS from the date each sub-test is passed.

For more information concerning the CSET, including registration fees, application deadlines, test dates, etc., read the CSET Examination Registration Bulletin and visit the CSET website at: http://www.cset.nesinc.com.
