Multiple Subject Credential - Spanish / English BCLAD

Bilingual Cross-Cultural programs prepare students for teaching in Bilingual Education and English Language Development settings where Spanish is appropriate for instruction, support, and communication with parents and other specified professionals. BCLAD includes all the general MSCP requirements plus: Teaching pedagogy and practicum in a second language; Culture of Emphasis (by coursework or examination) and Fluency of Spanish (by examination).

(Total units: 43 plus culture and language of emphasis)

Prerequisites (4 units)

  • EDEL 380 - Teaching and Learning in a Democratic Society (3 units)
    You must earn a B or better grade in this course.
  • EDSP 303 - Preparing to Teach Special Populations in the General Education Classroom (1 unit)
  • Submit Application to the MSCP - Group Information & Application Meeting and preliminary interview with Spanish bilingual faculty member (see below) and signature required.

Co-Requisites (listed in recommended sequence) (8 units)

  • EDEL 413 - Developmentally Appropriate Teaching Practices (2 units)
  • EDEL / EDP / LING 431 - Cultural and Linguistic Diversity in Schools (3 units)
  • EDP / LING 485 - Theoretical Foundations of Language Minority Education (3 units)

Subject Specific Pedagogy Courses(15 units)

Note: You must be officially admitted to the Multiple Subject Credential Program to take the following pedagogy courses. 150 hours as a teacher, assistant or volunteer in a multilingual setting is required prior to student teaching. It is recommended that EDEL 452B  not be taken during student teaching.  One pedagogy course may be taken during student teaching.

  • EDEL 452B - Teaching Reading in Spanish & English, K-8 (BCLAD) (3 units)
  • EDEL 442 - Teaching and Learning Language Arts, K-8 (3 units)
  • EDEL 462 - Teaching and Learning Mathematics, K-8 (3 units)
  • EDEL 472 - Teaching and Learning History-Social Science in Diverse Classrooms (3 units)
  • SCED 475 - Teaching and Learning Science, K-8 (CLAD) (3 units)

Co-Requisites (0 – 18 units) Requirements to be completed before Student Teaching

  • Culture of Emphasis: CHLS 340 or 350 (3 units) OR BCLAD Exam #5
  • Language of Emphasis: BCLAD Exam and recommended, not required  Spanish 312, 313, and 322 recommended (9 units)  #6 Spanish 312, 313, and 322 recommended (9 units)
  • LING 329 or ED P 454 strongly advised for language acquisition background

Student Teaching(16 units)

Note:  You must attend a Student Teaching Application Meeting and apply to student teach at the beginning of the semester before you take this course (please see section 6).   Student teaching while employed is available; see advisor for details. 

  • EDEL 482 (B or C) - Student Teaching in Bilingual Classrooms (16 units)
