Reading Certificate

The Reading Certificate program provides advanced preparation in reading/language arts assessment and instruction, clinical and field experience, as well as theory and research in teaching reading and language arts, grades K-12. This 15-unit program is intended for elementary and secondary teachers who desire advanced preparation in reading/language arts curriculum, assessment, instruction, and intervention. The focus is on designing and implementing appropriate reading/language arts programs for all children and youth, including English language learners.

Related programs in reading and language arts at CSULB include the Reading/Language Arts Specialist program (30 units, of which 15 are the Reading Certificate program) and the Master of Arts in Elementary or Secondary Education: Specialization in Reading (a 36-39 unit program which includes the 30 units in the Reading/Language Arts Specialist program).

Prerequisites for the Reading Certificate Program:

  • A valid elementary or secondary teaching credential; CLAD certification is strongly recommended
  • A minimum grade point average of 3.0 in the last 60 semester (90 quarter) units
  • Two letters of recommendation on school letterhead from educators familiar with your teaching (one must be from a supervisor or principal)
  • Autobiography and personal statement of intent (3 pages maximum
  • Interview with program faculty
  • EDEL 452 (Teaching Reading, K-8) or equivalent is strongly recommended

Additional requirement prior to completion of the Reading Certificate

Verification of three years of full-time teaching experience while holding a preliminary or clear credential. This verification must be received prior to completion of the Reading Certificate program.

Course Requirements for the Reading Certificate (15 units):

  • ENGL 481 or ENGL 482: Children's or Adolescent Literature (3 units)
    OR
    EDRG 520 Resources for Reading Teachers
    (May be taken prior to beginning program)
  • EDRG 540 Advanced Studies in Literacy (3 units)
  • EDRG 551 Assessment and Instruction in Reading and Writing (3 units)
  • EDRG 558 Language Study for Reading Teachers (3 units)
  • EDRG 559 Practicum in Teaching Reading/Language Arts (3 units)
