Research Interests

Parental involvement and parent-teacher communication in urban school settings, the role of leadership in children's literacy development, the role of the reading specialist in elementary school teachers' professional development, and preservice teachers' motivations and dispositions in pursuing a career as an elementary school teacher in English only, English learner, and bilingual settings.

Current Projects

Professor Lewis is a co-principal investigator of a FIPSE grant award in the amount of $300.000.00 from the United States Department of Education/Office of Post-secondary Education.  The grant funds a project to provide  teacher candidates with a teaching credential and a master's degree with an emphasis on teaching  English learners.  The grant project also includes a leadership institute to develop exemplary instructional specialists for servicing culturally and linguistically diverse student populations.
