Added Authorizations

The following authorizations may be added to valid Multiple Subject and Single Subject Teaching Credentials.

Supplementary and Subject Matter Authorizations

The Commission on Teacher Credentialing is currently reviewing the requirements for the Supplementary and Subject Matter Authorizations. The recent discontinuation of No Child Left Behind has prompted the Commission to revisit these authorizations. Please check back for updated information.

SA/SMA Workshops

Workshops for currently enrolled Multiple or Single Subject students interested in added authorizations

We will offer several workshops during the Fall 2017 semester. Each workshop will be lead by a Credential Analyst and will meet in the Credential Center, EED-42. Space is limited, so please RSVP. The Fall 2017 workshops are scheduled for the following dates and times:

  • September 14 - Thursday, 12-1pm RSVP
  • October 18 - Wednesday, 4-5pm RSVP
  • November 8 - Tuesday, 12-1pm RSVP
  • December 5 - Tuesday, 4-5pm RSVP

Adding a Multiple Subject, Single Subject or Additional Content Area (80499)

California Education Code, Section 44225(e) and Title 5, California Code of Regulations, Section 80499 allow a teacher to obtain an additional teaching credential without completing the full professional preparation program for that credential.

Add a Multiple Subject Credential

A Multiple Subject Teaching Credential may be added to a valid Single Subject Teaching Credential without completing an additional program. Completion of the following, will allow a Single Subject Credential holder to add a Multiple Subject Credential:

  • requires a valid Single Subject Teaching Credential
  • verification of subject matter competency-CSET Multiple Subject Exams
  • successful completion of a 3-semester-unit course in subject matter pedagogy directly related to teaching in a self-contained setting
  • successful completion of a course in alternative methods of developing English Language Skills
  • passing scores on the Reading Instruction Competency Assessment (RICA)

Add a Single Subject Credential

A Single Subject Teaching Credential may be added to a valid Multiple Subject Teaching Credential without completing an additional program. Completion of the following, will allow a Multiple Subject Credential holder to add a Single Subject Credential:

  • requires a valid Multiple Subject Teaching Credential
  • verification of subject matter competency-CSET Subject Area Exams or completion of an approved waiver program
  • successful completion of a methods teaching course in the academic area

Additional Content Area(s)

Additional Single Subject areas may be added to a valid Single Subject Teaching Credential. Completion of the following, will allow a Single Subject Credential holder to teach the new subject area in addition to their initial subject:

  • requires a valid Single Subject Teaching Credential
  • verification of subject matter competency-CSET Subject Area Exams or completion of an approved waiver program
  • successful completion of a methods teaching course in the new academic area

Application

The CTC requires applications for these authorizations to be submitted by mail. Candidates may submit their application directly to the CTC or to request an application submitted on your behalf, please submit the following items to the Credential Center:

  • completed Added Authorization Evaluation Request Packet
  • $25 Credential Processing fee (check or money order made payable to CSULB
  • copy of passing CSET results OR Original letter on letterhead verifying completion of an approved waiver program
  • copy of passing RICA results (if applicable)
  • official CSULB Transcript
  • completed 41-4 application
  • $100 Money Order (made payable to CTC)
