FAQ SECTION

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

Q: How can students apply for College of Education scholarships?

A: In order to access the web-based application at https://karl.papubs.csulb.edu/ced-students/, students will first need to set-up their MyCSULB account and password. This newly launched site will allow students to fill out a single application that will automatically determine their eligibility for multiple scholarship awards.

Students who are not currently matriculated at CSULB and do not have a CSULB student ID but plan to be enrolled in a program in the College of Education in 2010-2011 will need to contact Nikki Algarin-Chavarria (nalgarin@csulb.edu) to get a copy of the scholarship application.

Q: When can students apply for scholarships?

A: The scholarship application can be accessed from the link above. The application deadline is February 15, 2010.

Q: Who will oversee or who can I contact regarding the revised scholarship application process?

A: The Center for Scholarship Information administers the College scholarships (contact: Valerie Kelsey or Matt Cabrera, scholarships@csulb.edu). The College of Education Development Office oversees scholarship fundraising and donor-related activities (contact: Ann Tyler Allen, aallen3@csulb.edu).

Q: When will applicants be notified as to whether they received or were declined for a scholarship award?

A: The Center for Scholarship Information will send an electronic notification to students advising them of their application status. If awarded, students will be sent instructions on the enrollment standards they have to maintain to receive their award(s) and instructions to complete a thank you letter to donors.

Q: What are the award amounts of each scholarship?

A: Scholarship awards range from $250 to $3,000.

Q: How many scholarship awards will be awarded this semester?

A: We anticipate that we will award close to 150 individual scholarship awards for the 2010-2011 academic year. Click on the College Scholarship link to see the scholarships available for 2010-2011.

Q: Can a student receive multiple scholarship awards?

A: Yes, many of our highly qualified students receive more than one scholarship award. A single application must be completed and the applicant will be considered for all awards for which they are eligible.

AWARD ELIGBILITY

Q: What are the enrollment and GPA requirements for student applicants?

A: Minimum criteria are that students maintain a 3.0 GPA and a full load of CSULB courses (6 units- Masters Students/Student Teachers; 12 units - Undergraduates).  Please note that some scholarship awards have more competitive GPA and enrollment standards than the minimum College criteria.

Q: Can a student’s scholarship be revoked?

A: Yes, a student’s scholarship award can be revoked for the following reasons:

      • Student fails to meet scholarship award criteria as detailed in the e-notification letter.
      • Student does not deliver a donor a thank you letter to the Center for Scholarship Information by the specified deadline.

Q: Can a student’s award payment be deferred given extreme circumstances?

A: The Center for Scholarship Information will defer a student’s scholarship payment for up to one year only in the case of a verified medical or family emergency. It is the student’s responsibility to contact the Center for Scholarship Information once they re-enroll to claim this award.

Q: How can a student determine why he/she was not awarded a scholarship?

A: We ask that students who do not receive an award not contact the Center for Scholarship Information. Last year alone we had a competitive pool of 250 applicants, and were only able to award 130 scholarships. In order to make the most informed award selections, the College of Education faculty and donor committees carefully evaluate each applicant according to: 1) academic achievement, 2) financial need , 3) personal statement, and 4) letters of recommendation.

SCHOLARSHIP AWARD PROCESS

Q: When will students receive their scholarship award checks from the College?

A: In an effort to provide students with a more substantive award and to streamline the disbursement process, distributions will now be made once a year, approximately 8-10 weeks into the Fall semester.

Q: How will the scholarship awards be delivered to student recipients?

A: To avoid mailing errors and delays, the Center for Scholarship Information will directly deposit awards into student accounts on campus.  Funds will then be disbursed in the same manner as are student financial aid awards.
