FAQ SECTION

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

Q: How can students apply for College of Education scholarships?

A: In order to access the web-based application at https://karl.papubs.csulb.edu/ced-students/, students will first need to set-up their MyCSULB account and password. This newly launched site will allow students to fill out a single application that will automatically determine their eligibility for multiple scholarship awards.

Q: When can students apply for scholarships?

A: We estimate that the new application will be accessible as early as the beginning of January. The application deadline is February 13, 2009.

Q: Who will oversee or who can I contact regarding the revised scholarship application process?

A: Scholarship administration duties are being transferred to the Center for Scholarship Information (contact: Valerie Kelsey, scholarships@csulb.edu), while scholarship fundraising and donor-related activities will remain in the College of Education Development Office (contact: Deborah Veady, dveady@csulb.edu).

Q: When will applicants be notified as to whether they received or were declined for a scholarship award?

A: The Center for Scholarship Information will send an electronic notification to students advising them of their application status. If awarded, students will be sent instructions on the enrollment standards they have to maintain to receive their award(s), an invitation to the Scholarship Recognition Luncheon, and thank you letter instructions.

Q: What are the award amounts of each scholarship?

A: Scholarship awards range from $250 to $3,000.

Q: How many scholarship awards will be awarded this semester?

A: We anticipate that we will award close to 200 individual scholarship awards for the 2009-2010 academic year.

Q: Can a student receive multiple scholarship awards?

A: Yes, many of our highly qualified students receive more than one scholarship award by filling out one master online application.

AWARD ELIGBILITY

Q: What are the enrollment and GPA requirements for student applicants?

A: Minimum criteria are that students maintain a 3.0 GPA and a full load of CSULB courses (6 units- Masters Students/ Student Teachers; 12 units- Undergraduates).  However, some scholarship awards have more competitive GPA and enrollment standards that will be communicated to recipients in their e-notification letter.

Q: Can a student’s scholarship be revoked?

A: Yes, a student’s scholarship award can be revoked for the following reasons:

      • Student fails to meet scholarship award criteria as detailed in the e-notification.
      • Student does not deliver a donor a thank you letter to the Center for Scholarship Information by the specified deadline.

Q: Can a student’s award payment be deferred given extreme circumstances?

A: The Center for Scholarship Information will defer a student’s scholarship payment for up to one year only in the case of a verified medical or family emergency. It is the student’s responsibility to contact the Center for Scholarship Information once they re-enroll to claim this award.

Q: How can a student determine why he/she was not awarded a scholarship?

A: We ask that students who do not receive an award not contact the Center for Scholarship Information. Last year alone we had a competitive pool of 250 applicants, and were only able to award 130 scholarships. In order to make the most informed award selections, the College of Education faculty and donor committees carefully evaluate each applicant according to five categories: 1) financial need, 2) academic achievement, 3) volunteerism, 4) employment experience, and 5) two letters of recommendation.

SCHOLARSHIP AWARD PROCESS

Q: When will students receive their scholarship award checks from the College?

A: In an effort to provide students with a more substantive award and to streamline the disbursement process, distributions will now be made once a year, approximately 8 weeks into the Fall semester.

Q: How will the scholarship awards be delivered to student recipients?

A: To avoid mailing errors and delays, the Center for Scholarship Information will directly deposit awards into student accounts on campus.  Funds will then be dispersed in the same manner as are student financial aid awards.

A: Donors may contact the College of Education Development Office to schedule student interviews or review student applications in the beginning of March.
